The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 in India was effected September 15, 2003. The List of Geographical Indications registered in India, as on date is nearly 300. Add to it more than 200 GI applications are pending in the Indian GI registry. Some of the well-known Geographical Indications of India are Darjeeling Tea, Kanchipuram sarees, Tirupati Laddu, Mahabaleshwar Strawberries, Nagpur Oranges, Hyderabad Haleem, Meerut Scissors, Kondapalli toys, Mysore Silk, Dharwad Peda, Jaipur Blue Pottery, Chanderi Sarees, Banaras Sarees etc, and the list goes on and on. It must be noted that many of the products from countries abroad which have been registered as GI’s (or the equivalent of them in their respective lands) have been applied for Gi’s in India as per convention arrangement. Few of such products that have been registered in India are Champagne, the sparkling wine from Champagne region in France, Scotch Whisky from Scotland in the UK, Napa Valley wine from the United States etc.
